History
In the fall of 1998, the directors of the Fourjay Foundation created a proactive, non–profit organization
to help address the growing unmet medical needs in the local community.
The HealthLink Medical Center was launched as an organization of volunteer physicians, dentists, nurses, dental
hygienists, social service workers and pharmacists providing free primary medical and dental care to individuals and
families, employed without health insurance, who live in Bucks and Montgomery Counties.
Purpose
The Purpose of HealthLink is to:
 - Provide timely and adequate primary medical care intervention, including physical assessment, treatment planning,
primary intervention immunization, pharmaceuticals, minor procedures, counseling, and evaluation of patient response
to interventions.
- Provide timely and adequate dental care intervention, including physical assessment, treatment planning, primary
intervention (cleaning, extraction, repair, and counseling) and evaluation of patient response to interventions.
- Provide patient education activities, including individual assessment and instruction, as well as group and family
intervention.
HealthLink has developed a network of committed medical specialists who volunteer services to HealthLink patients when
referred by a HealthLink physician. This network includes connected ancillary professional services, such as pathology, radiology,
respiratory care and patient education services.
HealthLink makes every effort to provide primary pharmacy services to patients requiring pharmaceutical intervention. HealthLink
does not dispense narcotics, scheduled drugs, or contraceptives. Patients who require these interventions are referred through the
interagency network.
It is estimated that 43 million Americans lack health insurance. The 1998 need assessments in Bucks and Montgomery Counties estimate
16% of this population is uninsured. For the purpose of definition, the uninsured include individuals who are employed in part-time
positions without benefits; mature workers without benefits who are not yet eligible for Medicare; college students and recent graduates
without full–time employment and individuals and families affected by the 1997 decrease in Medical Assistance benefits. HealthLink Medical
Center includes individuals with prohibitive deductibles (catastrophic insurance only).
Eligibility
Eligibility is determined through a planned assessment process. Individuals who seek services are interviewed regarding specific primary
healthcare need, eligibility for existing programs, and current earned wages. HealthLink specifically addresses the needs of individuals who
meet the definition of employed, as described above, and who earn incomes that fall within 200 % of the federal standards of the poverty level.
Individuals who meet eligibility are re-evaluated on an on–going basis.
In nearby communities where voluntary clinics have been operating, there are annual savings of $500,000 to $1,000,000 per year in uncompensated
care currently provided by hospitals and other acute–care organizations. This includes services provided in the emergency rooms of local hospitals.
The Fourjay Foundation has purchased the property at 1775 Street Road, Southampton, PA and has donated its use for HealthLink’s clinical operation.
Medical services began on March 8, 2001 and dental services began August 15, 2001.
